Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company Leads Fire Prevention Efforts in Clarence, NY

As October rolls in, so does National Fire Prevention Month, an annual campaign dedicated to promoting fire safety and education. For the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company, which proudly serves the town of Clarence, NY, this month is a time of heightened community engagement and awareness efforts aimed at keeping residents safe from fire hazards.

According to Fire Captain Joe Saletta, this year’s Fire Prevention Month is centered around the theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” The focus is on educating the community about the critical role that smoke alarms play in fire safety. “Every sleeping area should have a smoke alarm, and these alarms should be tested monthly,” says Captain Saletta. “We also remind everyone that smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years to ensure they are functioning properly.”

In addition to smoke alarms, Assistant Chief John Moulin highlights the dangers of carbon monoxide, often referred to as the "silent killer." He emphasizes the importance of carbon monoxide detectors, which alert residents to the presence of this deadly, odorless gas. "Having both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home can save lives," says Moulin.

Throughout October, the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company will be particularly busy with its outreach efforts. “This year, we have more than a dozen school visits and community events planned in the town,” says Captain Saletta. “We are committed to educating our community, starting with the youngest members. Our volunteers dedicate their time to teaching fire safety, showcasing our equipment, and meeting residents.”

One of the biggest highlights of Fire Prevention Month is the annual Halloween Parade, a cherished event for the Clarence community. Sponsored by the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company, the parade kicks off at Circle Court and makes its way to the fire station on Main Street. Families from the area are encouraged to join in the festivities. After the parade, the fire station opens its doors for Halloween treats, activities, and a chance to meet local firefighters. “We look forward to seeing everyone at the parade,” says Captain Saletta. “It’s a fun way to end the month and connect with the community.” The event is scheduled on October 30th, check out our Facebook or Website for more information.

Fire safety awareness is crucial not only for protecting oneself but also for safeguarding those who may be more vulnerable, including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. "Fire prevention goes beyond just protecting yourself," adds Captain Saletta. "It's about protecting those who may not be able to help themselves, like the physically or mentally challenged, kids, elderly people, and pets."

By reinforcing the importance of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and engaging with the community through educational events, the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company is working hard to ensure the town of Clarence is well-prepared for fire emergencies. This Fire Prevention Month, they invite all residents to take proactive steps toward fire safety and come out to meet the firefighters who serve their community.
